Kien hemm siġra l-ġmiel tagħha. Iżda jum fost l-oħrajn l-għeruq bdew igergrulha: “Mhux sew li nibqgħu għeruq għal dejjem! Il-bnedmin jgħaddu jħarsu lejk, jammirawk u jistkennu fid-dell tiegħek, iżda ħadd minnhom ma jagħti kasna. Qisna ma ngħoddux. Irridu nkunu siġra bħalek bil-friegħi, bil-weraq u l-frott.” Is-siġra wieġbet: “Intom ilkoll parti mis-siġra. Mingħajrkom jien ma nistax nikber, nitqawwa u nagħti l-ħajja.”

Kif semgħu dan it-tgergir, il-friegħi riedu jsemmgħu tagħhom ukoll u qalu lis-siġra: “Ma rridux nibqgħu il-friegħi. In-nies jitħaddtu fuq iz-zokk u jfittxu l-fjuri u l-frott. Qatt ma stennejna li nkunu daqshekk imwarrbin. Irridu nkunu siġra bħalek.” U s-siġra tenniet: “Għalfejn tħabblu raskom u ttertqu qalbkom li n-nies isemmu aktar lill-oħrajn milli lilkom. Mingħajr il-friegħi, is-siġra ma jkollhiex weraq, fjuri u frott. Ilkoll għandna bżonn ta’ xulxin. Aħna siġra waħda.”

Anki l-fjuri żiedu jgħidu tagħhom: “ U aħna… kulħadd iqaċċat fina! Qisna neżistu biss għat-tbatija! Ma rridux inkunu l-fjuri tiegħek. Irridu ngħixu għal rasna.” “Intom l-isbaħ fost is-siġra kollha”, wieġbet is-siġra b’qalbha maqsuma. “U għax l-isbaħ, l-aktar li tbatu fostna. Imma s-siġra qed tbati magħkom. Aħna ħaġa waħda.”

U jien, kif inġib ruħi meta ma nħossnix importanti jew nara wisq difetti… naqta’ għal rasi u nwarrab jew nagħmel l-almu tiegħi biex nirranġa l-affarijiet? X’qed nagħmel biex ngħaqqad is-siġra fil-klikka, mal-kollegi, fl-organizzazzjoni li nagħmel parti minnha, fil-komunita’ tar-raħal, fil-familja?

Tislijiet,

Doreen Aquilina

A new pupil council was set up on 28th January 2015. All pupils in Year 3 to 6 were eligible to contest the election and also to vote. The PSCD teachers worked closely with Link teacher, Ms C Chircop in organising everything. Lessons about self esteem, good communication skills, diversity, assertiveness, leadership and conflict solving skills were held.

A total of 42 candidates presented their nomination for this election. An electoral campaign was held and candidates witnessed the sealing of the ballot boxes and made use of manifestos, complete with photographs and posters to proclaim why they would like to be elected and what they would do to make sure that they represent everyone in their class. All candidates were given a chance to voice their ideas in class. On the same day all candidates witnessed the sealing of the ballot boxes.

Ballot papers where prepared by Ms Claudine Chircop, Link Teacher.

On Election Day all classes made it to the school hall, one by one according to a preset timetable to cast their votes. Christina greeted voters one by one led the students to the Electoral Commission’s Table where Nathan checked names and marked each pupils. Gabriel stamped the ballot papers before Miriana handed them to the voters. Secret ballot was exercised in four cubicles by writing number 1 and 2 near the name and photo according to their preference. Finally the votes were counted by the members of the electoral commission. Votes were sorted according to class and validity was checked. Head of School, PSCD teachers and Link Teacher were all present during this process.
