At St Ignatius College Siggiewi Primary high priority is given to healthy eating and a healthy lifestyle. Healthy school lunches are requested through the School Policy and through one of the Action Plans in the school’s SDP.
The benefits and practicalities of providing healthy lunches cannot be over emphasized. School lunches should be healthy and portion sizes should be balanced. Healthy School Lunches are needed not only to boost pupils’ energy but also to help them improve their academic performance.
Inclusion of a range of fruit and vegetables is a must. A fruit salad is ideal but if including whole fruit, select fruit that is a suitable size for a child to easily hold and eat. Offer your children a variety of wholegrain bread and include low fat dairy foods. A serving of protein such as tuna, chicken, or egg is advisable. Although at school white milk is offered to all pupils a bottle of water should always be added.
To raise further awareness about the importance of healthy school lunches, photos portraying healthy lunches have been taken in various classes. This was primarily done to encourage pupils to get healthy school lunches but also to share some ideas with parents who day in day out are packing lunches for their school age children.
Through promoting healthier food and drink for packed lunches we aim at fulfilling the goals of turning our school into a healthier school.
